HOW ROADWORTHY AND SAFE IS YOUR VEHICLE REALLY?
An astonishing 1050 South Africans died tragically on our roads during December 2009, a 16% increase on December 2008. By far the majority of the tragic loss were passenger vehicle occupants who accounted for 40% of the total deaths. As at December 2009, there were 691 256* unlicensed and/or unroadworthy vehicles on South African roads (excluding trailerstowed vehicles) out of a total vehicle park of 8 600 031* – 8.04% of vehicles on South Africa’s roads today are either unlicensedunroadworthy.
Apart from the human factors such as driver intoxication that cause road accidents, there are a number of vehicle factors that contribute towards tragic fatalities such as: Smoothdamaged tyres leading to burst tyres (36.30%), Faulty steering systems (25.04%) and Faulty brakes (24.15%). This means that 85.48%* of all road traffic accidents during December 2009 were caused by defectiveunroadworthy vehicles and with over 754 000 kilometres of national roads, accidents caused by defectiveunroadworthy vehicles are a reality.
